Encyclia cordigera

Encyclia cordigera is found in lowland, rather dry, scrubby forests of southern Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and into Colombia and Venezuela. In Central America it is more common on the Pacific coast. These epiphytic plants have fairly large, erect, pseudobulbs that vary in size from 1 to 4 inches tall. They are clustered on a short connecting rhizome and are of a typical conical to pear-shape. Most growths have two leaves that arise from the top of the pseudobulb. The flower spikes emerge from between the leaves and may be as long as 30 inches.

The two to three inch blossoms are long lasting and all open about the same time. The petals and sepals are green heavily overlaid with brown or purplish brown. The lip may be white or magenta. Plants from Costa Rica and northern South America usually have white lips with a small magenta spot or streak in the center of the mid-lobe. Plants from Panama and Mexico normally have lips that are entirely flushed with magenta. The variety ‘rosea’ from Panama is considered one of the better ones.

Regardless of flower color the chocolate fragrance is most intense in bright light. Even the shadow of a passing cloud will reduce the fragrance.

Encyclia cordigera is considered easy to grow in warm to intermediate climates. The plant prefers medium to high light and intermediate to warm temperatures. Winter nighttime lows down to 58 degrees and daytime highs up to 80 degrees are about perfect. Summer temperature can be warmer. A difference of at least 5 to 10 degrees between day and night temperatures is necessary to initiate flowering.

Relative humidity should be near 80% during the growing season, dropping to 60-65% in winter and spring.

When watering it is best to use rain, distilled or reverse osmosis water applying it just as the plant dries out at the roots. Be observant of the size and shape of the pseudobulbs. If the newest pseudobulbs are plump, shiny, and round, adequate water is being supplied. If they are somewhat shriveled, the frequency of watering needs to be increased.

Fertilizer:
Use GrowMore 20-10-20 Ureafree for municipal or well water. Use at the rate of ½ teaspoon per gallon. If using GrowMore with rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water, add back in 5 - 10% municipal or well water to supply the necessary calcium and magnesium. Fertilize every other watering in the summer and every third watering in the winter.
