Growing Orchids

Cultural tips on specific genera by Yin-Tung Wang, Ph.D.

Question:  Dr. Wang, While at WalMart in Alamo, I found some terrestrial orchids in 6" pots with which I was unfamiliar. The leaves were large and pleated somewhat like Peristeria or Phaius leaves, but the flowers were very different looking much like those of Spathoglottis plicata. What do you know about growing these orchids here in South Texas? Interestingly, the plants came from Rio Grande Nursery, Inc. in Brownsville. Here are a few photos I took of the plants that I bought.

Answer:   Paul Wright of Rio Grande Nursery in Brownsville got the liners about two years back from a supplier in Florida.  We have thousands here in 3" pots and they are coming into flowering.  The price at Wal-Mart is really below the market value.  They can grow in the Valley, provided they are shaded and being provideed ample moisture at all times.Yin-Tung
